At school, I was in the top set for maths. My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts.
In fact, I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages. Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view. Nobody popular in my school chose to study those subjects.
Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviewers would say: “It’s great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?” Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions.
A survey recently showed that three of the best-paid jobs for women arc in the technology sector. It’s a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism. Anybody can learn to code and these days it’s as important as reading and writing. I’ve realized that at university I’d achieved the wrong kind of literacy. Now I have a five-year-old daughter. I don’t want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did. I want her to know the fact that a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could. I’m exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skills. On February 6, Space X, a private US aerospace company owned by Elon Musk, has successfully launched its new Falcon Heavy spacecraft, making it the world’s most powerful rocket.

Falcon Heavy went into space on its lest flight on February 6. I’m so glad to hear that you are planning to hold activities about Chinese poetry. To make it more meaningful and unforgettable, here is some advice.
To begin with, you’d better introduce the history of Chinese poetry which dates from ancient times briefly. Then you could share the different forms of poems with students. 范滂，字孟博，是汝南征羌人。从小磨砺出高洁的节操，受到州郡和乡里人的钦佩。被推举为孝廉，光禄四行。冀州地区发生饥荒，盗贼纷纷而起，于是(朝廷)任用范滂为清诏使，派他前去巡行查办。范滂走马赴任，慷慨激昂，有澄清天下污秽的志向。到冀州后，太守、县令知道自己贪污受贿，听说范滂来了，都自动辞官而去。
升迁为光禄勋主事。当时陈蕃担任光禄勋，范滂执行属下参见上司的礼仪拜访陈蕃，陈蕃没有阻止他，范滂觉得很遗憾，扔下笏板弃官而去。郭林宗听说后，责备陈蕃说：“像范滂这样的人才，难道应该(怎么能够)按照属下参见上司的礼仪来要求他吗!现在你成全他辞官的美名，莫非是自己选择了不好的议论吗?陈蕃于是向范滂道歉。(范滂)又被太尉黄琼征召。不久皇上下诏三府衙门的属官呈报反映官吏好坏的歌谣，范滂举奏了二十多个刺史和享有二千石俸禄的权贵。尚书责备范滂弹劾的人太多了，怀疑他有私心。范滂回答说：“我检举的，如果不是贪污腐败、奸邪残暴，深深地祸害百姓的人，(我)难道会因为私心而使奏章受到玷污吗?因为召开三公会议的日子迫近了，所以我先举奏了最紧要的；那些没有查清的，将要进一步查实。如果我的话有与事实不符的地方，我甘愿接受死刑。”(负责审理的)官吏无话可说了。范滂看到当今的时势正处于混乱的时候，知道自己的志向不能实现，于是呈递弹劾自己的状文辞官。
太守宗资此前就听说范滂美好的名声，(于是)请求朝廷让范滂暂任功曹，并把政事交给他处理。范滂在任功曹期间，严厉地整治他痛恶的人和事。范滂外甥西平人李颂，是王侯之家的子弟，被同乡的人所不齿。中常侍唐衡把李颂请托给宗资，宗资任命他做小官。范滂却认为他外甥李颂不是合适人选，就把这件事压下不办。宗资把怒气转嫁到书佐朱零的身上，鞭打书佐朱零。朱零仰起头说：“范滂(这样做)是公正的裁断，好像用锋利的刀刃切割腐朽的东西。今天我宁愿受鞭打而死，但范滂(的做法)无法改变。”宗资于是作罢。后来牢修诬告朝中有人结党营私，范滂获罪被拘禁在黄门北寺监狱。后来范滂的案情查清，范滂就回到乡里。
建宁二年，朝廷大肆诛杀钩党之人。诏书下达，紧急缉捕范滂等人。督邮吴导到县，手捧诏书，(把自己)关在传舍中，伏床哭泣。范滂听说这件事后，说：“(这)一定是因为我呀!”当即赶到县狱。县令郭揖十分吃惊，走出官衙，丢下官印，拉着范滂要和他一起逃走，范滂说：“我死了灾祸就可以平息了，怎么敢因为我的罪名连累您，又使得我的老母流离他乡呢!”范母前来和滂诀别，范滂告诉母亲：“我跟随先父去黄泉，是死得其所。只是希望母亲大人割舍这难以割舍的恩情，不要再增添悲伤了。”他的母亲说：“你现在可以和李膺、杜密齐名了，死了又有什么遗憾呢!已经有了美好的名声，又要追求长寿，(这样的好事)能够同时得到吗?”范滂跪下来接受母亲的教诲，再三拜别而去。经过的人听见了，没有人不被感动得流泪。这一年，范滂三十三岁。
